Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) Invitation for Public Comment

The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) is currently pursuing accredited status with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). As part of its assessment process, CALEA provides an opportunity for public feedback via a web-based public comment portal. The posting of this public comment portal is a requirement of CALEA law enforcement standard 45.2.3.

The purpose of this public comment portal is to receive comments regarding the SCSO’s compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status.  These comments can be made in the form of commendations or concerns. Information received from this public comment portal will be used by CALEA and the SCSO to support continuous improvement and foster the pursuit of professional excellence.

IMPORTANT: CALEA is not an investigatory body; subsequently, the public comment portal should not be used to submit information for such purposes. To file a formal complaint or commendation, please contact the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office directly.

Additionally, there will be no response other than an acknowledgment that the submission was received. The information provided will be considered in context to its relevancy to compliance with the standards and tenets of CALEA Accreditation.

Commend Personnel or File a Complaint

The SCSO is sincerely interested in rewarding excellent performance and administering corrective action in those instances where our personnel fail to meet our standards.

Citizen Commendation Procedure

To commend or compliment the performance of a member of the SCSO, notify a supervisor by:

This information is forwarded through the chain of command to the Sheriff. The Sheriff’s Office and its personnel appreciate the effort and consideration that citizens demonstrate by taking the time to commend personnel performance.

Complaint Procedure

It is the policy of the SCSO to investigate all legitimate allegations of misconduct made against the agency or personnel.

To file a complaint against a member of the SCSO, notify a supervisor by:

Any complaint received by a member of the SCSO is directed to supervisory personnel. If the allegation is serious in nature, the Sheriff will be notified as soon as practical.

Notifications will be made promptly to the reporting party upon completion of the investigation. If the complainant does not provide contact information, notifications cannot be made.

Caution: Any false, misleading, or untrue statements, accusations, or allegations made in relation to personnel of the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office may lead to civil or criminal sanctions.
